Embracing the Happy-mess of Our Days

“Time stands still  best in moments that look suspiciously like ordinary life.” -Brian Andreas

The holidays have come and gone, we rang in a new year, and there are toys from one end of my house to the other. Thanks to the generosity of family and friends, it looks as if Toys R Us set up shop in my home.

Embracing the Ordinary Days by Beth Williamson-RuseMy husband and I were talking to the boys about putting things away in an effort to reclaim our space.

As we did, our younger son asked why, and I cited that our house was a bit of a mess.

Without missing a beat, he replied, “You see a mess. I see happiness. Mom, it’s what I like to call happy-mess.”

I stepped back and looked around. I still saw a mess (and a pretty big one at that), but I also started to look at things through a different lens. I noticed the happy-mess within the toys strewn about.

For this mess won’t be here forever. It’s merely a moment in time. And a reminder of the happiness that every day moments- or messes- have. For one day, and I imagine sooner than I can actually fathom, the Legos will be stored away, the boys grown up and on their own, and our home neater- but also a bit more empty.

As we head into 2015 I have a wish for all of you.

My wish for you is to find time to pause, to be aware, and to be present in the “happy-mess” of your days. For what I am coming to find, is that it is the small, every day moments that comprise the fullest pieces of our lives.

Sending you love in 2015.
